Getting Started

Unitel-SIP Interop Settings and Conventions

Updated over 4 months ago

Welcome to UniTel

To help you get started with your UniTel SIP Services, we have prepared a guide with several of UniTel’s service-specific settings to keep in mind during your onboarding experience.

In this article, we'll cover our network, IP requirements, SIP signaling, dial plans, and more.

Let's get started!

Step 1: Configure your Firewall to allow Traffic

If a firewall protects your PBX hosting environment or PBX itself, please make sure that your network firewall allows traffic from the IP Addresses listed below.

Signaling Traffic:

UDP Ports 5060 – 5065 must be opened to support SIP signaling. 5060 is the default port for UniTel-SIP

  • 199.180.220.89

  • 199.180.220.91

  • 208.89.104.3

Media RTP proxies:
Allow *ALL* UDP traffic to/from Media IPs below:

  • 199.180.223.109

  • 45.55.33.77

  • 157.230.238.197

  • 45.33.70.196

  • 45.33.71.83

  • 159.65.107.252

  • 45.33.14.21

  • 159.89.122.218

  • 167.71.237.189

  • 172.104.226.108

  • 139.162.250.71

Step 2. Review General Conventions

Dial Plans:

UniTel supports 11-digit e.164 format characterized by the country code, then the phone number. For example:
Local & Long Distance: 16305551234
International: 4402014342130
Please ensure your PBX is configured to send and receive calls in the 11-digit format.

IP Protocols:

UniTel requires that all SIP and audio be delivered via UDP. TCP is not supported at this time.

Supported Codecs:

(G723/G729/G711) The system is transparent for codec negotiations

DTMF:

rfc2833

Concurrent Call Limits:

Each UniTel SIP Trunk is a bi-directional Trunk. By default, your UniTel SIP Account is limited to 10 concurrent calls. This default limit is imposed to protect our Network and our customers' integrity from potential Toll Fraud/abuse. Please open a ticket to request additional calling limits. Approval will be calculated and determined by the type of traffic and expected Monthly Calls and Minutes of Usage. If your call concurrency limit is reached, you'll be provided a 503 Service Unavailable or 486 Busy Here signal message.

Step 3. Add your UniTel Trunk to your PBX

Collect your SIP Trunk Credentials from the UniTel Portal:

  1. Log in to your UniTel Portal at www.unitelcustomer.com

  2. Navigate to Settings > Trunks and collect the trunk credentials by clicking more info […] and then [Trunk Info]

  3. Note the trunk’s username, password, and Domain. This information will be used to register your trunk in your PBX.

Step 4. Configure your PBX Inbound & Outbound Routes

The steps vary depending on your specific Device/PBX/UCM system. Follow the general steps below to get started. For configuration details on your specific UCM/PBX system, refer to our Help Desk or contact our support team for assistance.

  1. Create an Inbound Route for your UniTel Toll Free or Local DID Numbers in your PBX. Calls will be delivered to your PBX in 11-digit format.

  2. In your PBX, create your Outbound Route. Configure your PBX to pass a valid 11-digit Caller ID Number.
**Important** A valid caller ID must be sent with all outbound traffic. If your PBX does not send Caller ID Information, you may configure your UniTel Trunk to always pass your UniTel Number for all outbound calls. (learn more)

Important Considerations

  1. Outbound Traffic should be sent in 11-digit E.164 format. For example: 16305551234 -NOT- 6305551234

  2. Inbound Traffic will be received on your SIP Trunks in 11-digit format (16305551234). Be sure to configure your PBX Inbound Routes to properly match the 11-digit format.

  3. A valid caller ID must be passed in all Outbound Traffic.

  4. By default, UniTel SIP Trunks pass the SIP Trunk ID as the Identify / Caller ID Number. This must be changed for proper call termination.

  5. Outbound Caller ID Name will not work if you are not passing the 11-digit caller ID number of the number for which CNAM was enabled.

  6. Customers have two options:

    • Option 1: In your PBX, configure your settings to pass one of your UniTel DID Numbers in the required 11-digit format.

    • Option 2: You can also configure your trunk in your UniTel Customer Dashboard to always pass one of your UniTel DID numbers. This is managed under Settings > Trunks > Edit.
